Frequently Asked Questions
(Volunteer Teachers)

Please complete the Volunteer Teacher Registration Form on our organisation’s website and upload the required documents, such as a copy of your identification and academic credentials, as instructed.

Yes. We value your subject knowledge and passion for teaching. Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or higher from a local or overseas institution (including current university students) and must pass our organisation’s review and the Sexual Conviction Record Check (SCRC).

Our organisation is a volunteer teaching initiative. All teaching services are provided on a voluntary, unpaid basis, and we do not offer salaries or transport subsidies. We invite you to join us in a spirit of dedication to support students in need.

Upon passing the initial review, our organisation will issue a formal letter. Please:

* Use our letter to schedule an appointment for the check via phone or the Hong Kong Police Force’s online system.
* Attend the Police Headquarters in person at the scheduled date and time to complete the procedure.
* The fee for the check is to be borne by the volunteer teacher.

This check record is valid for one year and can be accessed by different organisations within that period.

The matching time depends on the service district, subject, and year level you have selected. The general waiting period is one to three months.

Our organisation will identify a suitable student based on your registered expertise, availability, and preferred district. Once a match is successful, our staff will contact both parties to coordinate the initial meeting.

Each appointment is valid for one year and can be renewed upon expiry.

To ensure teaching quality, each volunteer teacher is matched with only one student at any given time. If your schedule allows, you may apply to tutor more than one student, subject to our organisation's assessment and approval.

Yes. Volunteer teachers may request to change students up to two times per year.

Yes. Volunteer teachers with three years of satisfactory service may be promoted to Senior Volunteer Teacher. After five years of service, promotion to Lead Volunteer Teacher is possible. Following seven years of service and upon approval by the Chief Executive, one may be appointed as Volunteer Training Director to assist in training new volunteer teachers.

We recommend one tutoring session per week, lasting approximately one hour each. Specific arrangements can be agreed upon between the volunteer teacher and the parent/guardian, based on the student’s learning needs.

Yes. Please specify the subjects you are specialised in and the year levels you are willing to teach during registration. Our organisation will strive to match you accordingly.

To ensure the safety of all parties and the effectiveness of learning, all tutoring must be conducted in public venues, such as chain fast-food restaurants, public libraries, or community centres. Tutoring in any private premises (including student's home, teacher's home, or office) is strictly prohibited.

The schedule is flexible and can be agreed upon by the volunteer teacher and the parent/guardian. Sessions can be held on either weekdays or weekends.

The initial meeting aims for the volunteer teacher, student, and parent/guardian to get acquainted and confirm the learning arrangements. It is usually held at a public venue, with assistance from our staff or a senior volunteer teacher to verify identities and explain important guidelines. Formal teaching does not commence on this day.

Our organisation will provide the student's basic information (such as name, year level, and a photograph) before the meeting and inform both parties of the specific identification method (e.g., carrying our organisation's identification card).

Please bring your identification document and the volunteer teacher card issued by our organisation. You may also prepare simple teaching materials or learning suggestions to discuss a study plan with the parent/guardian and student.

Please contact the parent/guardian directly to arrange a new time as early as possible and simultaneously notify our organisation to update the record. We advise avoiding last-minute changes as a matter of respect.

After the initial meeting, subsequent tutoring sessions regarding timing, venue, and content can be arranged directly between the volunteer teacher and the parent/guardian without needing to book through our organisation, provided they are held in public venues.

Please communicate directly with the parent/guardian. Adjustments can be made once both parties agree. We recommend notifying our organisation of any changes to update our records.

Yes. To safeguard all parties and track learning progress, volunteer teachers must briefly record the key teaching points and duration of each session through our organisation's system or application.

Yes. We regularly organise teaching workshops conducted by experienced registered teachers, covering topics such as teaching techniques, classroom management, and special educational needs. All volunteer teachers are welcome to participate free of charge.

Yes. Upon completion or termination of service, our organisation will issue a “Volunteer Service Certificate” based on the actual hours served.

Please contact our support staff immediately. We will promptly assist with communication and mediation. If safety or policy violation issues are involved, our organisation will intervene promptly.

Please notify our organisation and the relevant parent/guardian at least two weeks in advance, stating the reason and assisting with a smooth transition. Our organisation will arrange rematching for the student and sincerely thank you for your contribution.

Please notify our organisation via email to update your information. If you wish to suspend or withdraw from service, please provide at least two weeks' notice to allow us to make the necessary arrangements.

If you are appointed to an administrative role within your service district, such as District Officer, the time spent performing these administrative duties will be recorded in addition to your teaching hours. This additional service time will be included in the total hours documented in your “Volunteer Service Certificate,” in recognition of your extra contribution to the organisation's work.
